Day 12 St Petersburg to Moscow Diary

The Red Arrow

semi-overcast 23 °C

Hey everyone!

We left the apartment at 9pm, our feet were aching, but somehow we managed to drag our suitcases to our local metro, Baltiskaya. We needed to travel 4 stops to reach the train station. You buy tokens 1st, and use these to go through turn styles to access the escalators. We knew it would be tricky to get a large suitcase through, but decided to do it anyway! I managed to slip mine underneath, but mum was't quite as lucky. Hers got stuck in the turn style, and she was unable to pull it through. This set off the alarms and 4 security guards came running towards us. They very kindly lifted her very heavy suitcase over the turn style. Very relieved and grateful! Also quite humiliated!

We reached the train station, had to queue to get our tickets with other passengers for ages! Slow moving queue! Finally got our tickets and went for a well deservered pint! We then found our platform and saw our train pulling in. Each carriage had its own attendant, dressed in a fabulous red uniform and hat, they stood to attention at the doors as the train played music! It was amazing! We found our coach and met our attendant, who spoke brilliant english. Our compartment was awesome, we had a free drink included, and breakfast, a choice of 4 options! We had a few drinks and went to sleep as breakfast was served at 06:45.

We were met on the platform for our transfer by a George Clooney lookalike! Our apartment is top. Not as nice inside as the last one, but we are on the 14th floor and our balcony overlooks the Kremlin, among other things which is a 10 minute walk from here!

So far, Moscow is brill!

Day 12 St Petersburg Diary

Trip to Peterhof & The Vodka Museum

sunny 27 °C

Hey all.

Apologies, having some problems uploading photos today. Should have it sussed soon!

Had a brilliant but exhausting trip to Peterhof, which took about 30 minutes on the hydrafoil. Love hydrafoil's! It was a really hot day, did lots of walking and saw the palace, gardens and fountains. Best one was called the Chessboard fountain! Very difficult to photograph! Had hotdogs and took the hydrafoil back to the centre.

Next we found the Vodka museum, opted not to have a guided tour which was a huge mistake as everything was in Russian - no English translations! Saw some pretty cool stuff though including vodka in a tube! The musuem has a gorgeous restaurant attached so we decided to eat our last meal in Saint Petersburg there. Both had very nice Russian wine. Mum had tongue and i had stroganoff! Delicious!

Our feet were pretty ruined by this point and getting back the apartment to pack was challenging and very painful! Said goodbye to the apartment owners and headed for the Moskavaya train station. Decided to do this on public transport with all our luggage which turned out to be really hard work!

Day 11 St Petersburg Diary

Hungover & Midnight Cruise

semi-overcast 18 °C

Hello all,

Started the day quite hungover! Decided to stay in and recover. Eat some food, watched a film then went back to bed. Woke around 7pm, had tea and a shower and walked to Nevsky Prospekt. Found an Englisg Guided boat tour that departed at 00:20. Had a beer in a local cafe, and then got on the boat! Trip finished at 02:00am, we then had an hours walk back to the apartment, very tired by 03:00am. The cruise was brilliant! The city is gorgeous at night. We went along the Neva and Moika rivers. We got to see 4 bridges on the Neva open one after the other, they were all lit up, and we were surrounded by other boats. There were loads of people stood on the banks watching the bridges as well. Big tourist attraction!

Fabulous evening. Off on a hydrafoil tomorrow to Peterhof, then leaving for Moscow tomorrow night!

Blog again soon!

Day 10 St Petersburg Diary

Full on Sightseeing day

sunny 20 °C

Hey everyone!

Woke up and made a brew and breakfast, discovered we are rubbish at shopping, as the milk turned out to be yoghurt and minerale water was actually soda water. Had to go shopping again!

Started today on Nevsky Prospekt, large street full of restaurants snd shops etc, similar to the Champs Elsyees and Las Ramblas. Waled to the top and went to the Winter Palace, gorgeous! Also saw Alexander Column. Queued for ages to get into the State Hermitage musuem, mum got attacked by a wasp the entire time, which i found quite amusing! Got to the front only to be told you needed the exact change! We didn't so decided not to queue again!

Decided instead to visit Saint Issac's Cathedral. Mum bought us tickets to go to the collonade, which she asked for in Russian - way to go mum! Long way up the stairs, but view from the top worth it!

Next we walked along the river to The Church of our Saviour on Spilled Blood. Saw the Bronze Horseman, very cool! We akso came to a bridge that was covered in padlocks, we had seen this before on a different bridge. The padlocks have hearts on them, or are heart shaped and have names and dates written on them. Really cute! Must wikipedia that! Just before the church, there was a really adorable little market. Bought a few presents!

The church is something else. You would have to see it to believe it! The inside is coveted in mosiac pictires, floor to and including the ceiling! Must of taken forever! It is absolutely beautiful!

Came home, had tea, then went to the pub. Turned very quickly into all night drinking session!
